Silver Ecclesiastical Signet Ring – Prelatic Coat Of Arms – 19th Century

Large silver ecclesiastical signet ring – Prelatic coat of arms – 19th century

A beautiful and imposing ecclesiastical signet ring, crafted from hallmarked silver, featuring a wide oval face engraved with a prelate’s coat of arms.

Description

The seal depicts a shield charged with fleurs-de-lis, surmounted by the ecclesiastical hat (galero) and surrounded by its cords and rows of tassels, attributes characteristic of the heraldry of Church dignitaries. Two scrolls bearing a motto complete the composition; their inscription, partially worn, remains difficult to decipher with certainty.

The shoulders of the ring are adorned with openwork cross-pattes, giving the piece as a whole a particularly pronounced religious character.

An interesting detail: the recesses of the engraving still retain ancient traces of red wax, likely attesting to its actual use as a seal intended for affixing a seal.

Condition:

Good overall condition, with wear, minor marks, and a patina consistent with its age. Traces of red wax remain in the die.
