Oval reliquary with architectural decoration—Saint Francis and several saints—19th century

Antique oval hanging reliquary, featuring a remarkable interior composition of gilded scrolls, containing several relics accompanied by their handwritten labels (tituli).

Description

This reliquary stands out for the richness of its decoration, arranged like a small architectural altarpiece.
The interior composition features two twisted columns draped in red fabric and gilded braiding, supporting a triangular pediment adorned with delicate volutes of gilded paper.

In the center, a relic is set within a radiant halo, composed of thin strips of gilded paper. It is accompanied by a handwritten titulus bearing the inscription “S. Franciscae,” referring to a saint named Françoise, subject to confirmation of the reading.

On either side, several small relics rest on cut-paper stands, surrounded by finely rolled strips of paper forming scroll and spiral patterns.
Other relics are arranged in the lower section, set against a backdrop of stylized foliage and gilded elements.

The piece as a whole attests to the special care taken with these religious compositions, where the meticulous work with rolled paper, colorful fabrics, and gilded elements contribute to enhancing the presentation of the relics.

The reverse, consisting of a metal plate decorated with crisscrossing lines, retains its red silk threads and a red wax seal.

Condition

Good antique condition, with an authentic patina.
Signs of wear, oxidation, old dust, and some deterioration of the decorative elements and inscriptions, consistent with the object’s age.
The red wax seal and the closing threads are preserved on the reverse side.

Dimensions: 8.5 x 7 cm

In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale pertains solely to the reliquary as an object of sacred art. The relics it contains are not part of the transaction but are included as a courtesy due to their historical and cultural value.
