Ancient Human Skull – Memento Mori – Later Painted Decoration

Authentic ancient human skull, likely from the 19th century, presented in the spirit of Memento Mori and the funerary traditions of Alpine ossuaries.

Description

The front features a painted design consisting of a large black cross surrounded by ivy branches, as well as the inscription in Gothic script “Anna Kogler – 1885.”

This painted decoration was added after the skull was created and therefore cannot be considered an original funerary inscription. The name and date should be understood as part of this later decorative addition, inspired by the famous painted skulls found in ossuaries in Austria and the Alpine regions.

Condition

The skull features a beautiful antique patina as well as imperfections, cracks, chips, and missing teeth consistent with its current condition, all clearly visible in the photographs.

A unique curiosity cabinet piece, particularly evocative of the iconography of Memento Mori and European ossuary traditions.
