Neoclassical Ciborium In Solid Silver - Silversmith émile Doublet (ed) - France, Circa 1900
Description
Prestigious solid silver covered ciborium, a masterpiece of sacred silversmithing dating from the turn of the century (circa 1900).
This liturgical object features a highly understated Neoclassical style, emphasizing clean lines over excessive ornamentation.
The Silversmith’s Hallmark (Master Silversmith): Clearly stamped in a horizontal diamond shape on the rim of the cup and on the cross. The initials E and D, separated by a central symbol (a key or a vertical tool), are clearly visible. This is the mark of the Parisian goldsmith Émile Doublet, who specialized in high-end ecclesiastical art and was active in Paris in the late 19th and very early 20th centuries.
The Official Hallmark: An oval hallmark depicting a swan in profile is visible on the cross and the cup. In France, the swan hallmark is the “random” or “customs guarantee” hallmark. It certifies that the object is made of solid silver (minimum guaranteed fineness of 800/1000), often used to mark secondhand items re-assessed by French assay offices or those of European import origin.
