Description:
The figure depicts a living Christ in agony, head tilted back, eyes raised, mouth slightly open.
The face is expressive, with finely incised beard and mustache, and long hair falling in wavy locks over the shoulders.
The arms are wide open in a dynamic and dramatic pose. The hands are pierced for attachment to the cross.
The torso is slender, with realistic anatomy, a pronounced ribcage, a hollowed-out navel, and well-rendered muscular tension.
The loincloth is carved with beautiful, deep folds, held in place by a finely detailed
Superb patina with reddish highlights.Made from what is known as Sainte-Lucie wood, which has a tight grain and a reddish hue; this variety of cherry tree came from the forest of Sampigny-en-Barrois, now destroyed, which belonged to a convent that gave its name to the wood.
