17th-century Copper Platter Bearing The Coat Of Arms Of The Spanish Habsburgs

Majestic ceremonial copper platter in repoussé work bearing the coat of arms of the Spanish Habsburgs
Spain, 17th century, circa 1620–1650

Important ceremonial copper dish, embossed and chased, circular in shape, adorned in the center with the prestigious coat of arms of the Spanish Habsburgs. The shield, surmounted by the royal crown, is surrounded by a rich heraldic decoration consisting of an imperial double-headed eagle, rampant lions, and griffins, testifying to the power of the dynasty that ruled over much of Europe and the New World.

The broad wing is adorned with a succession of stylized leaves in high relief, forming an elegant radiating frieze that highlights the central medallion. The finely hammered background contrasts with the polished sections of the repoussé decoration, creating a remarkable interplay of light and relief.

This piece belongs to the great tradition of European copperwork, in which mastery of repoussé copper allows for the creation of a decoration of exceptional sculptural richness. Originally intended to adorn an aristocratic interior or to be displayed during ceremonies, this platter stands as a remarkable testament to 17th-century Spanish decorative arts, a period during which heraldic emblems affirmed the prestige and authority of the House of Habsburg.

In very fine condition, with a beautiful, uniform antique patina.
