Sealed Tubular Reliquary - Saint Paula Of Rome - Certificate 1881
Sealed tubular reliquary - Saint Paula of Rome - certificate 1881
Rare tubular glass reliquary and red leather-wrapped mount, with gilded brass hooped ends, containing a relic attributed to Saint Paula of Rome (Sta Paula vidua Romanae).
Description:
The relic, presented on a textile background adorned with paperolles, gilded threads, pearls and decorative elements, is held in a careful devotional composition. The manuscript titulus in Latin clearly identifies the saint.
Saint Paule of Rome (347-404) was a noble Roman widow who became a disciple of St. Jerome, whom she followed to the Holy Land, where she founded monasteries in Bethlehem.
A major figure of early feminine Christianity, she embodied asceticism, charity and the renunciation of wealth in favor of the spiritual life.
The set is perfectly sealed with textile threads and an armorial red wax seal, guaranteeing integrity. The reliquary retains its original ecclesiastical certificate of authenticity, dated 1881, mentioning a fragment ("fragmentum") enclosed in a crystalline tube ("in tubo crystallino").
Devotional work typical of the second half of the 19th century, combining didactic presentation and object of private oratory piety.
Condition:
Very good condition. Seal intact (normal light surface wear). Interior clean and stable.
In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns only the reliquary as an object of sacred art. The relics it contains are not the object of the transaction, but are included free of charge for their historical and cultural value.
