The original icon became famous as miraculous in the 16th century, when it was found in Kazan following the visions of a young girl. Kazan became an important center of Orthodox spirituality, the image of the Kazan Mother of God spread to all Russian churches, and July 21 – the date of the discovery of the icon of Mary of Kazan – was included in the liturgical calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church.
