Object description :

"Large Statue Of The Crowned Virgin And Child – 19th Century – 120 Cm"
Large statue of the Virgin and Child, crowned (120 cm) – 19th century – France.

An imposing devotional statue depicting the crowned Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus, a late 19th-century work typical of French and Belgian religious art intended for churches and chapels.

Description:

The Virgin is shown standing, holding a scepter, a symbol of her heavenly kingship. The Infant Jesus, also crowned, holds the orb surmounted by a cross, emblem of Christ the King and his sovereignty over the world. The iconography clearly belongs to the post-Tridentine Marian monarchical tradition.

The faces and hands are made of polychrome wood with gentle and serene expressions. The body consists of a frame draped in antique liturgical textiles.

The ensemble is richly adorned with its original clothing: • Ivory satin dress • Gold metallic thread embroidery • Rhinestone, turquoise cabochon, and pearl appliqués • Antique metallic braid • Fur-trimmed cape (evoking ermine, a royal symbol) • Large late 19th-century antique lace veil.

The two figures wear superb repoussé silver crowns, adorned with gilded globes surmounted by fleur-de-lis crosses. Fine and antique work, perfectly consistent with a liturgical Marian coronation.

Dimensions:
Total height: 120 cm.

Condition:

Complete and stable statue. Minor chips visible on the face of the Infant Jesus. The Virgin's face is well preserved.
Antique textiles in good overall condition, with normal age-related wear.
Crowns in good condition, with slight oxidation from use.
