Silver Crucifix Of The Passion, Italy, 19th Century
An elegant Italian penitential crucifix from the second half of the 19th century, crafted entirely of silver using fine repoussé and chisel work. The piece is distinguished by its rich iconography depicting symbols of the Passion of Christ. On either side of the Savior’s body, Longinus’s spear and the rod with the sponge soaked in vinegar are positioned diagonally. At the top, the cartouche bearing the Titulus Crucis (INRI) stands out, cast in the shape of a rolled-up parchment scroll, while at the foot of the cross is depicted the traditional skull and crossbones, a symbol of Golgotha and victory over death. The structure features a built-in ring, allowing it to be used both as a hanging cross and as an element for a private processional or altar pole.
