Antique Silver Sugar Bowl, Russia, Moscow, 1885
An elegant antique sugar bowl in solid silver, crafted in Moscow in 1885 during the reign of Alexander III. The piece is distinguished by its refined design, clearly inspired by the Neoclassical style. It rests on a circular, finely chased stepped foot that tapers into a slender shaft before flaring out into a rounded, crater-shaped body. The upper rim is flared and smooth, flanked by two symmetrical ribbon-style side handles that give the piece a proportionate and slender silhouette.
The central band of the body is entirely hand-decorated with superb burin and chisel work: it features a rich garland of floral and botanical motifs, engraved on a background of fine geometric hatching that enhances the metal’s luster. In the center stands out a smooth oval cartouche, historically intended for the engraving of numerals or noble coats of arms, which remains blank.
The hallmarks—indicating 84 Zolotniki silver, the Moscow assay mark featuring St. George, the date 1885, and the numbers of the silversmith and assayer—are stamped on the base.
