Antique Display Case With An Alabaster Madonna Of Trapani And Silk Flowers - 19th Century
An elegant devotional shrine (scarabattolo) from the first half of the 19th century, a prime example of Sicilian religious craftsmanship. At the center of the composition stands a statuette of the Madonna of Trapani, finely carved from alabaster. The Virgin is depicted according to classical iconography, holding the Child in her arms, resting on a decorated pedestal. The figure is framed by a sumptuous “grotto”-style garland composed of polychrome silk flowers, entirely handmade with extraordinary technical mastery. The petals and leaves still display vivid chromatic hues, creating a harmonious contrast with the whiteness of the alabaster and the deep red velvet background. The work is preserved within its original wooden frame with shelf-style feet, protected by glass that has ensured its structural and chromatic integrity over time.
