Object description :

"Large Wall Reliquary Containing The Relics Of Saint Ursula And Her Companions — 18th Century — Germany"
Large wall reliquary containing the relics of Saint Ursula and her companions — 18th century — West Germany.

An important wall reliquary of elongated oval shape, presented in a carved wooden frame decorated with foliage in high relief, typical of the late Baroque style.

Description:

The glazed mount protects a devotional composition on a red textile background.
The interior contains two large bone relics, arranged parallel to each other and richly adorned with antique metal braid.
Each relic is sealed with several heraldic wax seals and held in place by metal fasteners, attesting to an authentic ecclesiastical mounting.
A handwritten and painted scroll clearly identifies the set: “Brachia unius sociarum sanctae Ursulae V. et M.” — indicating relics from one of the arms of one of the companions of Saint Ursula, virgin and martyr, a major figure in the Rhenish hagiographic tradition.

The reverse side retains its original closure system with threads and a red wax seal bearing an ecclesiastical imprint, attesting to the reliquary's integrity since it was sealed.

This large devotional object, characteristic of 18th-century convent or ecclesiastical production, possesses a striking decorative presence and strong historical significance.

Dimensions: 50 cm x 23 cm.

Condition:

Very good condition, with wear consistent with age; original seals and mounting preserved.

In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns only the reliquary as a sacred work of art.
The relics it contains are not the subject of the transaction but are included free of charge for their historical and cultural value.
