Reliquary Containing 7 Relics Of Fathers And Doctors Of The Church – Italy – Late 17th Century
Oval silvered bronze reliquary containing seven relics of Fathers and Doctors of the Church – Italy, late 17th / early 18th century.
Authentic oval silvered bronze reliquary, of early production, probably Italian, dating from the late 17th or very early 18th century.
Description:
The front features a finely chased oval frame with floral motifs, surrounding a gilt textile background with woven decoration, typical of Baroque relic presentations. In the center, a hand-painted and calligraphed polylobed composition of parchment contains seven separate relics, each placed in a circular compartment bordered with cut paper.
The saints identified by handwritten inscriptions are:
• St. John Chrysostom. (Saint John Chrysostom)
• S. Antonini (Saint Antoninus, most likely Antoninus of Florence)
• S. Basilii (Saint Basil the Great)
• S. Gregorii M. (Saint Gregory the Great)
• S. Athanasii (Saint Athanasius of Alexandria)
• S. Caesarii (Saint Caesarius)
The group forms a coherent pantheon of Fathers and Doctors of the Church, giving this reliquary strong theological and symbolic value. The relics (ex ossibus) are held in place by ancient threads and wax, in a careful and balanced arrangement.
The reverse is sealed with a red wax seal bearing a coat of arms, pierced by metal threads, guaranteeing the reliquary's ancient integrity.
The seal is in old condition, with normal wear but its heraldic structure is still legible.
Condition:
Good overall condition. Even wear to the silvering, consistent with age. Interior intact, parchments and inscriptions well preserved. Antique seal present.
In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns only the reliquary as a sacred work of art.
The relics it contains are not the object of the transaction, but are included free of charge for their historical and cultural value.
