 Ivory carved depicting the VirginMary holding a bouquet of lilies (emblem ofpurity). Head inclined, expression collected,deep draperies. Careful workshop work,probably of Belgian-French area around1890-1910.

Descriptions

Original mounting on molded base in redbreccia marble (type blood breccia /cherry), fixed by metal rod and nut.Signature: engraved on the back of the ivoryterrace: “A. Goothals” (plausible reading“Gouthals”).

 · Material: elephant ivory (antique,pre-1947); red marble base.
 · Period: late19th – early 20th century.

 · Dimensions: H. total 15cm; H. ivory 10  cm; Ø base  5 cm. 

Status 

·Ivory: small withdrawal slots and naturalveining, minimal wear with floral reliefs;beautiful warm ivory patina, satin polished. ·Base: scratches and an oldaccident/sticking visible at the top filet;natural veins and breaks of marble typical ofthe breach; bottom pierced for the nut(original fastening). 
· Stable set, goodpresentation.
