Solid Silver And Vermeil Chalice
Magnificent solid silver chalice (with a vermeil interior), a masterpiece of early 20th-century French sacred silverwork.
This piece is distinguished by its exceptionally elegant lines, blending the Neo-Gothic revival with the modern geometry of the Art Deco period.
Description
The Bowl and the Outer Bowl: The flared silver bowl fits into an outer bowl delicately cut in circular arcs. It is adorned with relief carvings of wheat stalks and stylized leaves that stand out against a finely grained background.
The interior of the cup features its original, dazzling fine gold plating (vermeil).
The Knot and the Stem: The cylindrical stem is punctuated at the center by a flattened (melon-shaped) knot, richly chiseled with geometric floral motifs set within rhombuses.
The Foot (Base): The calyx rests on a wide circular base with a conical shoulder, echoing the bowl’s decoration with large lobed motifs, alternating smooth surfaces and guilloché areas from which stylized water leaves spring forth. The rim of the foot is embellished with an elegant frieze of beaded pearls.
The Fine Silver Hallmark (State Guarantee): This is the official Minerve 1st title hallmark (in an octagonal cartouche with beveled sides). This hallmark guarantees a purity of 950/1000 sterling silver (the highest French standard).
The Silversmith’s Hallmark: Silversmith’s Hallmark (Master Silversmith): Engraved within a horizontal diamond-shaped cartouche, displaying the initials D & T surrounding an eagle with outstretched wings (distinct from the famous Parisian sacred art house Demarquet Frères / D&T, active in the early 20th century).
