Silver Folding Cross With A Gilded Christ Figure – Streicher – 19th Century
Silver folding cross with a gilded Christ – STREICHER – 19th century
Beautiful silver folding cross, likely from Central Europe and dating from the 19th century (+/- 1850)
Description
Latin in shape, it features four multi-lobed ends adorned with a finely engraved checkerboard pattern.
The obverse is centered by a gilded, applied relief figure of Christ, surmounted by the equally gilded inscription INRI.
Fine engraved rays surround the head of Christ.
The reverse is particularly well-crafted, featuring an elegant engraved design of stylized foliage.
It bears the mark “STREICHER,” stamped out in full within a rectangular cartouche.
Despite our research, this mark could not be definitively linked to a specific goldsmith; it may correspond to a manufacturer of religious objects from the Germanic region.
The cross features an interesting hollow construction that opens completely. The removable back is held in place by a long through-screw, whose ring-shaped head forms the lower end of the cross. This mechanism allows access to the interior space, which was likely designed to hold a relic or a devotional object.
The presence of a large suspension ring at the top indicates that it was intended to be worn or hung.
