Christ On The Cross - Flanders, Belgium? - 18th Century
CHRIST ON THE CROSS
Flanders, Belgium?
18th century
Boxwood
H: 30; W: 13 cm
(old restorations)
Christ in boxwood with a slightly orange patina on the protruding parts and brown on the deeper parts such as the hair or the folds of the perizonium. The latter has the distinctive feature of not being marked with a knot but hemmed around Christ's waist.
His hair, with finely incised strands, is pulled back, his head turned to the right, his gaze imploringly turned towards the sky; his short beard is divided into two strands – this new iconographic style emerged in the mid-16th century.
His legs are bent and his feet are superimposed: the left foot rests on the right and both were pierced by a single nail – as were both of his hands.
