Madonna and Child
Oil on cardboard, 34 x 29 cm
Frame: 44 x 40 cm
Signed lower right
The painting examined, executed in oil on cardboard, is a modern interpretation of the iconographic theme of the Madonna and Child, signed by Luigi Mantovani (1880-1957). With loose, light and blended brushstrokes, the artist evokes the sweetness of the maternal bond with an impressionistic touch, immersing the figures in a chromatic mist dense with spirituality.
The Virgin's face, wrapped in a blue cloak, stands out gently next to that of the Child, rendered in warm, vivid colours. The composition is vibrant and enveloping, characterised by a palette of pastel tones and touches of bright colour that hint at the forms rather than defining them, in keeping with the artist's mature style.
The work fits perfectly into the more lyrical vein of Luigi Mantovani's production, known mainly for his views of Milan and Lombardy landscapes, but also the author of works on sacred and family themes.
The pictorial style can be traced back to Mantovani's late period, when his brushstrokes became more rarefied, almost ethereal, and the subject emerged from a vibration of light and colour rather than from a defined drawing.
Luigi Mantovani was one of the leading figures in 20th-century Milanese painting.
A student at the Brera Academy from 1896, he studied with Giuseppe Mentessi, Vespasiano Bignami and Cesare Tallone, who influenced him particularly with Carcano. He developed a personal style, suspended between impressionism and divisionism. He participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennales and the Rome Quadriennales. His painting is distinguished by the intimacy of his subjects, the diffused light and a lyrical and contemplative vision of reality.
