Lodi Majolica Shaving Bowl, 18th Century – Figurative Decoration And Vibrant Polychrome
Artist: Manufacture De Lodi, Xviiie Siècle Lodi (lombardie)
Lodi workshop, 18th century
Lodi (Lombardy)
Barber’s basin
Polychrome majolica, h 8 × 30 × 22 cm
Elegant barber’s basin in polychrome majolica, characterized by a flowing shape with a wavy rim and a contoured profile.
The rim is decorated with stylized floral motifs and vibrant splashes of color in shades of blue, yellow, green, and gray, while the center of the rim features a figurative scene, painted with a free and narrative style, depicting a figure immersed in a natural landscape. This theme evokes the light and poetic taste of Lombard Rococo culture, standing out as a more refined element compared to the more common floral motifs alone.
The decorative ensemble, lively yet harmonious, gives the piece a strong aesthetic presence, making it ideal both for collecting and as a distinctive piece of decor.
The spontaneous and lively painting style, together with the brilliant color palette, recalls the Lodi production of the mid-18th century, featuring low-fire decoration—a technique that allowed for a richer and more refined color palette.
Lodi’s ceramic production represents one of the pinnacles of Lombard majolica. It reached its zenith in the 18th century, thanks to major manufacturers such as Ferretti, Coppellotti, and Rossetti, who produced objects of high technical and decorative quality. Local manufacturers distinguished themselves for their high technical quality and decorative richness, with a production intended for a refined clientele that extended even beyond Lombardy.
The shaving basin examined was an integral part of the men’s toiletries set and was used during shaving, often in combination with jugs or water containers. The characteristic front opening allowed for practical and functional use, making these objects both useful and representative. They were objects that were both functional and representative, intended for domestic settings of a certain social standing.
The basin is made of majolica, a ceramic coated with a matte white tin-based glaze, which allows for brilliant and detailed painted decorations.
In the 18th century, the third-firing technique (low-temperature firing) became widespread, allowing for the use of more delicate and varied colors, fixed at low temperatures.
A highly charming object, ideal for collectors of Italian majolica or for those wishing to incorporate an authentic 18th-century element into a refined interior design setting.
Signs of aging consistent with the period (chipping, craquelure, and slight signs of use) and cracks.
