An elegant bronze sculpture depicting Bacchus (Dionysus), the god of wine, fertility, and ritual intoxication, portrayed in his customary youthful iconography—nude and in a dynamic pose, with his body arranged in a refined twist. The young god is accompanied by the leopard, his traditional heraldic animal, while the grape clusters, vegetation, and the thyrsus, held in his raised hand, complete the deity’s symbolic repertoire.

The composition stands out for its highly dynamic composition: the body of the young Bacchus extends vertically, while the long drapery and plant elements create a sinuous, enveloping flow, accentuated by the presence of the animal at the base. The rendering of the nude figure, the hair, the leaves, and the panther’s fur highlights a modeling technique attentive to the variety of surfaces, typical of European sculptural production intended for collecting and for refined interior decoration between the 19th and 20th centuries.

The iconography stems from the enduring popularity of the young Bacchus accompanied by a panther, a theme already widely present in ancient sculpture and later revived by artists of the Renaissance and the Neoclassical period. In particular, in depictions of Bacchus, the panther may be shown approaching the grapes offered by the god; the thyrsus—a ritual staff adorned with foliage and generally topped with a pine cone—is one of Dionysus’s most characteristic attributes.

This motif enjoyed considerable popularity in small-scale bronze sculpture: there are documented examples from France and Italy dating from the 16th and 17th centuries depicting the young Bacchus with a panther, as well as numerous 19th-century reinterpretations intended for the antiquities market and collectors
