Piedmontese School, 20th century
Still Life with a Vase of Flowers
Oil on canvas, 47 × 60 cm
Frame: 72 × 62 cm

A refined floral still life belonging to the 20th-century Piedmontese school, painted in oil on canvas and characterized by a rich and dramatic composition, in which the bouquet occupies almost the entire pictorial space, emerging from a dark background that enhances its luminosity and vibrant colors.

The quality of the brushwork, the texture of the paint, and the vibrant rendering of the flower petals are reminiscent of the work of Francesco Bosso (Vercelli, 1864 – Turin, 1933), a Piedmontese painter who specialized in floral still lifes, to whose work this piece serves as an interesting stylistic reference. Although the painting is unsigned, numerous elements—from the arrangement of the bouquet to the brilliant color palette, right down to the free and textured brushwork—are consistent with his style, which developed into a personal artistic language based on a skillful balance between naturalism and creative freedom.

The bouquet is arranged in an apparently spontaneous yet carefully balanced composition, in which the floral masses unfold with natural movement, creating a refined interplay of light, shadow, and transparency.

The composition brings together various ornamental species, depicted in the tradition of European floral painting.
The following are recognizable: peonies (Paeonia lactiflora), the focal point of the composition and a symbol of prosperity, nobility, and good fortune; roses with soft, open petals, a traditional emblem of beauty and the transience of life; small forget-me-nots (Myosotis sylvatica), which introduce vibrant blue accents; anemones and buttercups, recognizable by their light, flowing corollas; and numerous buds, leaves, and ornamental branches that lend depth and naturalness to the whole.
In keeping with the finest tradition of floral still lifes, the painter brings together species from different flowering periods, creating an ideal composition rather than a botanically realistic one.

The work bears striking similarities to the work of Francesco Bosso in terms of its rich color palette;
the rendering of light on the flower heads; the monumental yet balanced compositions; and the decorative style with 17th-century roots reinterpreted in a modern key.

Although unsigned, this painting shares numerous affinities with Bosso’s work and can be placed within the context of 20th-century Piedmontese floral painting, linked to the close circle and figurative tradition of Francesco Bosso.

The work is in good overall condition and is presented in an elegant, contemporary frame made of wood veneered with briar, which enhances its decorative impact.
