Nude female figure – Venus
Bronze, H 35.5 cm – Black marble base with white veins, ø 12 cm
This refined bronze sculpture depicts a nude female figure in a slender, contemplative pose. Her arm raised above her head, framing her face, and her gaze turned downwards evoke the grace and sensuality of the classical Venuses, reinterpreted through the modern aesthetics of Art Deco.Dating from the interwar period, this sculpture fully reflects the Hungarian Art Deco aesthetic, which flourished between 1925 and 1938. During this period, Budapest was a dynamic artistic centre (formerly an important artistic hub of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) where schools of decorative arts developed, combining the influences of Viennese Art Nouveau with modern trends from Paris. The sculpture rests on a solid circular base in black marble with white veins, which gives it stability and contrasts harmoniously with the warm patina of the bronze. The material, in its various surface finishes, is more polished in the protruding parts, worked, for example, in the detail of the hair, thus revealing a delicate play of light and shadow. The female figure, often idealised as a symbol of beauty and modernity, was a recurring theme in the decorative arts of the time. The sculpture recalls the iconography of the classical Venus, reinterpreted through the fluid and stylised lines of Art Deco. The combination of classical and modern elements gives the work a timeless charm, making it a significant example of early 20th-century decorative sculpture.
