This still life depicts a collection of flowers and fruit laid out on an undefined stone surface, like the dark, uniform background that enhances and emphasises the individual components. The lumpy surface of the lemons and the hollowed-out flesh of the watermelon reflect the light, as do the soft skins of the peaches and the hard rind of the pomegranate. The composition is comparable to contemporary 17th-century examples from the Lombard school, whose naturalistic influence can be seen in the descriptive autonomy that is totally unprecedented in the rest of Italian art at the time.
