Box
Carved and chased solid wood, H 40 x W 61 x D 44 cm
Important octagonal box in solid wood, richly carved on each side in the eclectic style of the Italian Neo-Renaissance of the late 19th century. Each surface is meticulously decorated with leafy scroll motifs, masks, heraldic shields and dancing cherubs in high relief on the lid, enclosed in frames with pods and fish scales.
The base stands on four carved feet, each with a medallion decoration, which give stability and majesty to the whole. The interior is lined with red velvet edged in gold and conceals, on the back of the lid, a refined hidden compartment with a flap door and three internal drawers, perfect for storing jewellery or small precious objects.
The generous proportions and rich ornamentation make this piece particularly rare and valuable.
Neo-Renaissance is an artistic movement that spread throughout Europe between the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, rediscovering the forms and motifs of Italian Renaissance art. Characterised by a high attention to detail, decorative abundance and symbolic references, this style was often used in the furnishings of aristocratic and bourgeois residences as a sign of culture, taste and prestige.
The piece on offer is a perfect example of this movement: a functional and decorative work of art, skilfully crafted by a talented woodcarver, combining formal beauty and complex construction.
