Signature: “Boutigny – Palais Royal” in gold, under the base
Elegant fine porcelain cake stand, made in Paris between 1860 and 1870, signed Boutigny – Palais Royal. The work bears witness to the excellence of French artistic production in the second half of the 19th century, combining decorative refinement and manufacturing skill.
The Boutigny Palais Royal signature can be traced back to a luxury goods and decorative arts boutique operating in the famous shopping arcade of the Palais Royal, the heart of high society and refined commerce in 19th-century Paris. This was where the most prestigious shops selling art objects, crystal, clocks and fine porcelain were concentrated, selling to an aristocratic and bourgeois clientele.
Many of these items were commissioned from leading manufacturers, such as Sèvres or other private Parisian workshops, and then decorated and sold through the shops of the Palais Royal. Boutigny was one of these leading retailers.
The cake stand is made of excellent quality porcelain, white, smooth and decorated by hand. It is embellished with pure gold thread applied with a brush on the edges and decorative band. The rim features a light green enamel beaded decoration with white dots, in the “perles” style, which was very popular during the Napoleonic period and afterwards.
The decoration features naturalistic floral bouquets, painted with extraordinary miniaturist precision. The following can be recognised: the yellow rose (Rosa lutea), symbol of joy and friendship, often found in 19th-century decorations; pink and red roses, emblems of love, beauty and grace; forget-me-nots (Myosotis), flowers of remembrance, with delicate blue petals; the pansy (Viola tricolor), symbol of reflection and memory, bluebells and wildflowers, recurring decorations in French naturalistic porcelain.
The botanical subjects are typical of the mid-nineteenth-century floral style, influenced by naturalistic painting and an interest in scientific botany, often found in tableware and decorative objects of the period.
This cake stand is an excellent example of the refinement of 19th-century French decorative arts. The quality of workmanship, the elegance of the shapes and the meticulous attention to floral details make it an object of great historical and aesthetic value.
