Gravy boat
Porcelain, H: 16.5 x W: 25 x D: 9.5 cm
An elegant French porcelain sauce boat with a single pourer and handle, made in Paris between 1780 and 1790, at the height of the Louis XVI period. The slender, balanced shape recalls the incipient neoclassical taste of the time, while the hand-painted decoration blends geometric and symbolic elements in a refined and mysterious ornamental language. Applications of pure gold embellish the artefact with refined elegance.
The body of the sauce boat is decorated with a sophisticated design of cobalt blue geometric zigzag motifs, criss-crossed by gilded floral garlands containing small stylised blue eyes in the centre - rare elements, perhaps evocative of quasi-Masonic or esoteric symbolism, such as the “all-seeing eye”.
The upper rim and handle are decorated with intertwined laurel branches, a classical symbol of glory, virtue and triumph, widely used in the decorative repertoire of Greco-Roman inspiration.
The gravy boat is representative of the transition from the light, curvilinear Rococo decoration to a new, more restrained, austere and intellectual aesthetic, a reflection of a changing society.
