Lombardy, Late 18th Century - Louis XVI
Pair of bedside tables
Inlaid in various woods, H 76 x W 56 x D 40 cm
Elegant pair of Lombard bedside tables in Louis XVI style, made in the late 18th century. The structure, with a slender parallelepiped shape on truncated pyramid legs, features a hinged door decorated with rare figurative inlays within central medallions, a work of fine cabinetmaking.
The doors depict two distinct Arcadian scenes: on one, a wayfarer with a stick looks at a bridge and a fortified building; on the other, a figure wearing traditional headgear walks towards a village with a tower. On the upper level, other neoclassical inlays depict musical instruments, sheet music and floral motifs, recalling the 18th-century cult of the arts and knowledge.
The decoration is completed by refined plant motifs along the uprights and sides, also inlaid, framed by rosewood and palisander fillets on a walnut background, using the “herringbone” technique.
The polychrome use of different types of wood (walnut, maple, etc.) creates a striking pictorial effect with remarkable chromatic depth, in keeping with the Milanese tradition of fine cabinet-making.
These bedside tables are in the neoclassical style of Louis XVI, inspired by classical antiquity and widespread in northern Italy under French influence. The geometric shapes, rigorous symmetry and use of decorative motifs inspired by nature and ancient architecture make them a paradigmatic example of Lombard furniture of the time.
