"Parisian Porcelain Jug, Louis Philippe Period, 1850–1860 ‘fleur Peinte’ Decoration"

Paris, mid-19th century

(1850–1860, Louis Philippe period – Second Empire)

‘Fleur peinte’ jug

Hard-glazed and gilded porcelain, H 24 x W 25 x D 14

Hand-painted underglaze, brush-applied gilding

Mark engraved on the base

Elegant, finely decorated porcelain jug, made in Paris in the mid-19th century, during the transition period between the reign of Louis Philippe and the Second Empire. This refined piece perfectly represents the ornamental taste of the period: sumptuous yet harmonious, rich yet balanced.

The rounded body, shaped neck and sinuous handle highlight the stylistic influence of Viennese and German porcelain, but with the decorative lightness typical of Parisian manufacturers. The surface is hand-decorated with a botanical bouquet of extraordinary variety and realism.

The floral scene, executed with great skill by painters specialising in naturalistic decoration, follows the French “fleur peinte” tradition. Among the recognisable botanical species are: Gallic roses (old roses with pink tones), brightly coloured anemones and buttercups, delicate bluebells and morning glories, bright orange oriental poppies (Papaver orientale), blue forget-me-nots (Myosotis), cornflowers and wild violets. The background is carefully variegated with different shades of green.

The confident brushstrokes and skilful use of shades and colour contrasts reveal the experience of the artist, who was probably trained in the decorative schools linked to the independent manufacturers in Paris that flourished after the Restoration.

The jug, marked on the bottom with an engraved mark, can be traced back to one of the famous independent manufacturers operating in the Belleville or Bastille districts. These workshops supplied high-quality products for both the domestic bourgeois market and export. The gilding, applied cold and then finished hot, is still brilliant and a sign of high-quality workmanship and technical expertise.
