Christ at the Column
Oil on walnut wood, 31 x 43 cm
Antique frame 43 x 59 cm
The episode of the flagellation of Christ is depicted in a dimly lit setting. This passage is recounted in all four Gospels and is one of the final episodes in the trial of Jesus, before the crowning with thorns. The Counter-Reformation saw the introduction of a common iconographic scheme depicting Christ tied to a tall column, evoking the relic of the column of the flagellation brought to Rome in 1223 by Cardinal Giovanni Colonna and preserved in the Basilica of Santa Prassede.
The serpentine figure of the tortured Christ is depicted here at the centre of the scene, with a strong characterisation given by his violent, already deathly pallor and livid face, thus creating a symbolic distinction between the whiteness of Jesus and the dark figures surrounding him, in particular that of the executioner on the right, ready to strike another blow with the whip. The other two henchmen in the background, partially swallowed up by the shadows, are also caught in the act of striking further blows on Christ's back with force.
