Elegant polychrome majolica tray made in Bassano, dating back to the mid-18th century.
The plate, which is shaped and slightly lobed, features a refined decoration with floral compositions obviously painted by hand in bright colours such as blue, yellow, green and red. The decoration, inspired by the naturalistic models in vogue at the time, is harmoniously distributed over the surface, with a more prominent bouquet on one side and secondary motifs scattered along the multi-lobed rim.
The ceramic production of Bassano del Grappa has ancient origins and became particularly important in the 17th and 18th centuries thanks to the Antonibon family, who transformed the city into a centre of excellence for majolica. The works of the Bassano manufacture are distinguished by the quality of the paste, the brilliance of the glaze and the pictorial decorations characterised by floral motifs, genre scenes and oriental inspirations.
Majolica is a porous ceramic covered with a tin glaze that gives it a white, opaque surface suitable for pictorial decoration. During the 18th century, Italian manufacturers, particularly those in Bassano, developed a decorative language characterised by floral and landscape motifs, often influenced by contemporary imported porcelain.
Pieces similar to the tray offered here can be found in important museum collections, including the Museum of Bassano del Grappa, which houses a large selection of Antonibon majolica, and the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza.
