An elegant lakeside landscape by Mario Moretti Foggia (1882–1954), a refined painter of Italian landscapes from the first half of the 20th century.
The work depicts a tranquil cove overlooking a large alpine lake, with a female figure doing laundry on the shore, while in the background stretches a low mountain range dotted with small settlements.
The composition, constructed with great balance, is dominated by the vast expanse of water reflecting the mountain ranges and the sky, characterized by a vibrant cloud formation rendered with full-bodied, luminous brushstrokes.
The setting suggests a view of the lakes of northern Piedmont, areas the painter visited frequently during the final decades of his life. Although the exact vantage point cannot be identified with absolute certainty, the painting clearly belongs to that series of lake and mountain landscapes that constitutes one of the artist’s most highly regarded works.

Born in Mantua in 1882, Mario Moretti Foggia made his debut at a very young age in Milan’s major exhibitions, participating in the shows organized by the Permanente and the Famiglia Artistica. He participated in four editions of the Venice Biennale between 1920 and 1926 and, at the same time, developed a significant body of work as an Orientalist painter, thanks to his numerous trips to Egypt, Syria, and North Africa. However, alongside his famous views of Cairo and Damascus, his works depicting the landscapes of Lake Verbano and the Alps now represent one of the most sincere expressions of his artistic exploration, in which nature becomes the absolute protagonist of the composition.
This painting bears direct resemblance to similar works depicting the lakes of Piedmont, found in public and private collections, which share the same spatial composition, the use of raking light, and the presence of small figures immersed in the landscape.
The artist’s signature in the lower left corner, the quality of the paint, and the freshness of the execution place this work among the most compelling examples of the artist’s mature period, a time when the landscape became a synthesis of direct observation and sensitivity to light.
