Ceramic Ceremonial Plate, Mid-18th Century
Mid-18th century (ca. 1740–1760)
Ceremonial plate decorated with small fruits
Majolica, diameter 40 cm
Wide-rimmed ceremonial plate with a shallow rim in polychrome majolica, decorated with motifs of small red and purple berries and plant clusters.
This large-format piece (Ø 40 cm) belongs to the category of “bacili” or large dinner plates common in 18th-century Italian production.
Polychrome low-fire decoration on a white tin-glazed background.
The main motif features a continuous, undulating vine pattern on the rim, embellished with small fruits (red and dark berries), stylized foliage, and linear clusters. The rim features three medallions with scattered floral/fruity bouquets. The execution is free and cursive, with rapid brushstrokes and minute decoration, typical of the high-quality mass-produced 18th-century ware, often intended for elegant domestic use.
The “small fruit” motif is part of the simplified naturalistic repertoire common in 18th-century majolica, when decoration tended to favor stylized and repetitive plant elements rather than figurative scenes
In the 18th century, Italian majolica production focused primarily on everyday objects decorated with a lively and immediate style, often inspired by the natural world (flowers, fruits, birds).
