Saint Anthony of Padua with the Infant Jesus
Oil on canvas, 72.5 x 63.5 cm
Frame, 90.5 x 82 cm

The painting in question depicts Saint Anthony of Padua in a devout pose as he contemplates the Infant Jesus, who has miraculously appeared above an open book. The saint is depicted in half-length, wearing the traditional brown Franciscan habit cinched by a cord with knots, ending in a small skull, a symbol of his membership of the Order of Friars Minor.
With his hands crossed over his chest—a gesture of devotion and mystical wonder—the saint holds a branch of white lilies, an iconographic attribute of purity and an emblem of chastity and holiness. The Child, naked and wrapped in a light cloth, appears in a blessing and luminous pose, emerging from the clouds in a supernatural atmosphere that emphasises the moment of spiritual intimacy between the saint and Christ.
The scene takes place in an intimate setting: the open book, resting on a table covered with a red cloth, alludes to the saint’s life of study and preaching. The soft lighting and the simple yet effective compositional structure are typical of 17th-century Emilian devotional painting, designed to encourage meditation and immediate spiritual understanding.
The iconography of Saint Anthony with the Infant Jesus derives from an episode in the hagiographic tradition according to which the saint, during a mystical vision, received a visit from the Infant Christ. The presence of the open book is a clear reference to the saint’s profound theological learning; he was a great preacher and has been a Doctor of the Church since 1946.
Anthony of Padua (1195–1231), born in Lisbon as Fernando Martins de Bulhões, was one of the most celebrated Franciscan preachers of the Middle Ages. After joining the Order of Friars Minor, he became known for his extraordinary theological eloquence and for spreading Christian devotion among the people.
He died in Padua in 1231 and was canonised just one year later by Pope Gregory IX, a sign of the extraordinary popular veneration he commanded. He is one of the most honoured saints in the Catholic tradition and his iconography is among the most recognisable in European sacred art.
The soft chiaroscuro, the naturalism of the faces, the intimate and devotional atmosphere, and the balanced, narrative composition all reflect the 17th-century Emilian tradition. This type of work was often intended for private devotion, employing an accessible and spiritually engaging pictorial language that introduced the faithful to prayer and meditation.
