Elegant gunpowder flask made of stamped iron, designed to supply black powder for muzzle-loading rifles and pistols. This specimen features the classic design with an upper spout equipped with a spring-loaded dispenser operated by a lever—a technical solution that allowed for the dispensing of a controlled amount of powder directly into the barrel of the firearm, reducing waste and speeding up the loading process.

The entire surface is decorated with embossed relief patterns in a refined Neo-Renaissance style. On one side is a nude female figure identifiable as Venus (Aphrodite), depicted within an idealized landscape featuring mountains, architecture, and trees. On the opposite side is the profile of a bearded elderly man crowned with a laurel wreath, traditionally identified as Vulcan (Hephaestus), the Roman god of fire and metallurgy.

The juxtaposition of the two figures is not coincidental: Venus and Vulcan form one of the most famous couples in classical mythology and frequently appear in the decoration of objects intended for hunting and weapons, as Vulcan represents the divine blacksmith, creator of the weapons of the gods and heroes, while Venus symbolizes beauty and the classical ideal. One of the episodes featuring this divine couple is recounted in Virgil’s *Aeneid*, where Venus persuades Vulcan to forge weapons for Aeneas—a story that enjoyed immense popularity in art.

From a technical standpoint, the flask is made from sheet iron stamped in a die, then finished with a chisel, featuring a calibrated spout and a hinged closure lever. The two side eyelets allowed it to be attached to a shoulder strap or a belt. This type was widely used between 1830 and 1880, before the definitive adoption of metal cartridges, when powder flasks were still an indispensable accessory of hunting and military gear. Numerous contemporary examples preserved in private and public collections attest to how these objects were often conceived not only as functional tools but also as works of art, richly decorated with mythological, allegorical, or hunting scenes.
