An important chest of drawers from the Lombardy region, specifically from Bergamo, dating to the 17th century, crafted from walnut and characterized by a monumental structure, rich carved decoration, and a refined architectural design of the front.

The piece features a front divided by three large drawers, arranged in three rows and separated by sturdy molded frames. Each drawer is defined by a rectangular panel within a complex profiled frame. The austere geometry of the front is enlivened by the presence of carved side posts, consisting of caryatids—anthropomorphic figures emerging from plant motifs—in accordance with an ornamental repertoire typical of Lombard Baroque figurative art.

Particularly significant is the treatment of the side posts, richly carved from solid wood, in which the figurative elements blend with foliage and raceme motifs. The sculptural decoration gives the piece a pronounced verticality and creates an effective contrast with the flatter, more orderly surface of the drawers.

The upper section is topped by an overhanging top, accentuated by an ornamental band with dentils, while the base features a molded cornice and shaped cantilevered legs, which are also characterized by ornamental carving.

The construction and decorative style place this piece within the tradition of the large Lombard chests of drawers and “canterani” from the Bergamo area, in which the functionality of the furniture is accompanied by a strongly architectural and sculptural conception. Sixteenth-century Bergamo furniture production is in fact characterized by the use of walnut, the sturdiness of the structures, the geometric division of the facades, and the use of floral and figurative carvings as a defining element of the piece.
