An oval covered sugar box in sterling silver 925, model #2, Blossom / Magnolia collection, designed by Georg Jensen in 1905 and executed by the Georg Jensen Silberschmiede in Copenhagen between 1933 and 1944. Height approx. 8.7 cm · width 13 cm · depth 9.5 cm. Square Georg Jensen hallmark 1933–1944 · Dutch import mark on the reverse.
The Blossom collection — called Magnolia in Danish — is Georg Jensen's first hollowware creation: the 1905 teapot, topped with a magnolia bud and balanced on toad feet, was the founding work that revealed his genius. The floral motif — a stem winding upwards around the handle to emerge as a flower bud on the verge of opening — is the most personal and accomplished expression of Scandinavian Art Nouveau applied to silversmithing. The Blossom flatware pattern #84 was introduced in 1919 — the most exclusive and labour-intensive pattern in the entire Jensen production, entirely handwrought.
The presence of the Dutch import mark attests that this piece, like many Jensen creations of the 1933–1944 period, was exported to the Netherlands — a collector market particularly receptive to Danish design in the interwar years.
Upon his death in 1935, the New York Herald Tribune saluted Georg Jensen as "the greatest silversmith of the last 300 years." His works are held in the collections of the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen, MoMA in New York and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
