German Art Deco Bauhaus Table Clock In Silver 800/1000, Design By Gebhard Duve Berlin Ca. 1930
Gebhard Duve / Margraf & Co. – Table Clock, Silver 800 and Glass, Berlin circa 1930Art Déco · Bauhaus · Silver 800 · Documented in Contemporary Specialist Press · Dedicated Inscription 1933
A table clock in sterling silver 800 and engraved glass, designed by Gebhard Duve circa 1930 and executed by Margraf & Co. in Berlin. The circular glass dial — with hour markers as tapering triangles, no superfluous numerals — is set within a polished silver ring, mounted on a low rectangular silver base. The absolute sobriety of the composition, the elimination of all ornament, and the tension between the circularity of the dial and the rectilinear base place this clock at the apex of Berlin Art Déco design circa 1930, in the spirit of the Neue Sachlichkeit. Hallmarks on the reverse: MARGRAF & Co · halbmond · crown · 800 · W. Dedicated inscription engraved on the base: 3. 11. 1933 Putzi.
Piece documented in the contemporary specialist press: Das schöne Heim — Illustrierte Zeitschrift für angewandte Kunst, III. Jahrgang / Dekorative Kunst 35. Jahrgang (40. Band), Munich, 1932, p. 359 — illustration of this clock with a variation of the dial.
Gebhard Duve (Osterwieck, 1899 – Sölden, 1977), Berlin-based interior architect, silversmith and designer, opened his own studio in Cologne in 1925 and created cutlery designs for Franz Bahner, Düsseldorf. From 1926 he designed for Margraf & Co. Berlin, taking over the management of the firm in 1930 — the firm's premises on Unter den Linden being situated directly opposite the workshop of Émile Lettré. In 1938 he took full ownership of Margraf & Co. Denes-szy
His few known works are distinguished by a singular quality: a serene design approach that avoids all excess and thereby achieves timeless results. Works by Gebhard Duve / Margraf & Co. are held in the collections of the GRASSI Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Leipzig and the Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin. Grassimak
