Louis Majorelle Nancy 1900 Art Nouveau Child's Armchair In Mahogany
Louis Majorelle – Child's Armchair in Mahogany, Nancy circa 1900 École de Nancy · Art Nouveau · Precious Woods · Rare Piece
A child's armchair in solid mahogany and precious woods, designed and executed by the workshops of Louis Majorelle in Nancy circa 1900. Barrel-shaped back with vertical turned spindles, curved arms ending in characteristic volutes, oval upholstered seat on a bowed apron with a row of gilt nail-heads, gently curved legs with sabots — the full Majorelle formal vocabulary rendered here in miniature, with exceptional refinement.
The seat height of 32 cm confirms without ambiguity the childhood destination of this chair. In the grand bourgeois and aristocratic households of the Belle Époque, it was common practice to have children's furniture — and occasionally the furniture of much-beloved companion dogs — made by the same ateliers and to the same exacting standards as the reception rooms. A Majorelle child's armchair is therefore a rare and touching document of domestic life among the Lorraine and Parisian bourgeoisie around 1900.
Louis Majorelle (Toul, 1859 – Nancy, 1926) was one of the founding vice-presidents of the École de Nancy in 1901 and one of the most celebrated figures of the French Art Nouveau movement. He was appointed Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur at the Salon of 1900. His works are held in the collections of the Musée de l'École de Nancy, the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
