Emile Gallé Nancy Art Nouveau Periwinkle Side Table Circa 1900
Émile Gallé – "Pervenche" (Periwinkle) Occasional Table, Nancy circa 1900–1902 École de Nancy · Precious Wood Marquetry · Signed · Documented Model
An occasional table in precious woods with marquetry top and sculpted periwinkle (Vinca minor) floral decoration, designed and executed by the workshops of Émile Gallé in Nancy circa 1900–1902. The veneered top features marquetry in walnut, softwood, ash, cherry and tropical woods, hand-polished with shellac. Four curved legs joined by a stretcher with periwinkle flowers carved in the round. Signed in the marquetry lower right.
The Pervenche model is catalogued and illustrated in the standard reference work: Alastair Duncan & Georges de Bartha, Gallé (Thames & Hudson / Hachette), Plate 140, together with the original preparatory sketch of 1902 (Plate 140a). The table belongs to the Occasional tables series — salon side tables — which represent one of the most elaborately conceived categories of Gallé's furniture production.
Émile Gallé (Nancy, 1846–1904), ceramicist, glass artist and cabinetmaker, was the founder and first president of the École de Nancy in 1901. At the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900, his works earned him two Grand Prizes, a gold medal and the title of Commander in the Légion d'Honneur. His furniture is held in the collections of the Musée de l'École de Nancy, the Musée d'Orsay, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon.
