Ilse & Thomas Dawo – Bracelet, Silver 925 Set with Jade Discs, Düsseldorf circa 1960 Thomas Dawo (1931–2024) · Ilse Dawo (1930–2022) · Düsseldorf · Silver 925 · Jade · Mid-Century Modern · Künstlerschmuck
A sterling silver 925 bracelet set with natural jade discs, designed and executed by the Ilse & Thomas Dawo atelier in Düsseldorf circa 1960. Diameter 2.1 cm · length 18.5 cm. Signed with the maker's signet Thomas DAWO, DÜSSELDORF. Entirely handwrought — Handarbeit.
The combination of hammered silver and jade discs — sober, geometric, of absolute Mid-Century elegance — is characteristic of the Dawo atelier's formal vocabulary in the 1960s: a language synthesising the influence of the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm, the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris and the artisanal tradition of German silversmithing.
Ilse Dawo (Düsseldorf, 1930 – Düsseldorf, 2022) trained at the Theodor Blume workshop and the Werkkunstschule Düsseldorf. Thomas Dawo (Düsseldorf, 1931 – Düsseldorf, 2024) studied at the Werkkunstschule Düsseldorf, the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris and the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm. In 1958 they founded together their jewellery and object atelier in Düsseldorf — one of the most important creative goldsmiths' ateliers in the Rhineland in the second half of the 20th century. In 1969 they received the Staatspreis Nordrhein-Westfalen for applied arts — the Land's highest artisanal distinction. From 1973 to 1996 Thomas Dawo was Professor of Design Fundamentals at the Fachhochschule Düsseldorf, Faculty of Architecture. Their atelier trained several generations of goldsmiths. Works by Thomas Dawo are held in the collection of the Stiftung Deutsches Design Museum / Rat für Formgebung, Frankfurt.
