Rare Silver Coin Cup By Andreas Junge I, Königsberg (east Prussia), 1740
An exceptional East Prussian silver coin beaker, crafted in Königsberg (today Kaliningrad) in 1740 by the distinguished goldsmith Andreas Junge I (master from 1710, died 1757).
The beaker bears the Königsberg city mark, the date letter "D", corresponding to the year 1740 according to Scheffler, and the master's mark of Andreas Junge I (Scheffler; Czihak No. 222).
Its cylindrical body is parcel-gilt inside and mounted with twelve original historical silver coins, while the base is decorated with a large silver taler, creating one of the characteristic East Prussian coin beakers of the eighteenth century.
Historical Significance:Coin-mounted drinking vessels were among the most distinctive luxury objects produced in Königsberg during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. They combined the art of the goldsmith with contemporary numismatic collecting and reflected the extensive commercial connections of the Baltic trading region.
The carefully selected coins illustrate the monetary circulation within Northern and Eastern Europe and include issues from:
- Frederick III, Duke of Holstein-Gottorf (large base taler)
- Sigismund III Vasa, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania
- Frederick I, King in Prussia
- Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg (Mariengroschen)
- Danzig and other Baltic issues
The youngest identified coin is a VI Mariengroschen dated 1714, providing a secure terminus post quem for the manufacture of the mounted coin assemblage.
