Vase, Candlestick, (no.1.) Mid Century Modern, 925 Silver, Schwäbisch Gmünd Circa 1970-80
Hermann Bauer, Schwäbisch Gmünd – Vase / Candleholder No. 1, Sterling Silver 925, Timeless Design, circa 1970–1980 Silberwarenmanufaktur Hermann Bauer · Founded 1863 · Schwäbisch Gmünd · Silver 925 · Handmade · Height 15.2 cm · Weight 102 g
A vase / candleholder of strict geometric form in sterling silver 925, entirely handmade, executed by the Silberwarenmanufaktur Hermann Bauer in Schwäbisch Gmünd circa 1970–1980. Height 15.2 cm · base 5 × 5 cm · weight 102 g. Marked with the Hermann Bauer hallmark. Timeless design without ornamentation — form alone, the quality of the silver and the care of the hand.
The form — a sober cylinder on a square base, without ornament or decoration — is the most direct expression of the Hermann Bauer manufactory's philosophy in the second half of the 20th century: "Far removed from mass-produced industrial goods, unique individual pieces are created here with timeless charm — often with lovingly maintained historical techniques." The weight of 102 g for a vase of this size attests to the quality of the solid sterling silver 925 used — a material worked by hand at every stage of production, in a manufactory that has never abandoned the artisanal techniques transmitted from generation to generation for more than 160 years.
The Silberwarenmanufaktur Hermann Bauer was founded in 1863 in Schwäbisch Gmünd by Hermann Bauer (Abstatt bei Heilbronn, 1833 – Schwäbisch Gmünd, 1919). After training as a steel engraver at Bruckmann & Söhne in Heilbronn — one of the greatest German silverware houses — and periods of study in Utrecht, Pforzheim, London and Paris, Hermann Bauer founded his manufactory inspired directly by the South Kensington Museum in London (today the Victoria and Albert Museum). He was one of the founders of the Museum im Prediger in Schwäbisch Gmünd (1876) and co-founder of the current Hochschule für Gestaltung in Schwäbisch Gmünd. His creations were worn by Queen Olga of Württemberg, earning him the epithet "Renaissance-Bauer". Products of the manufactory are held in the permanent collection of the Museum im Prediger in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The manufactory is today led by Sven Möller, great-great-grandson of the founder, in the fifth generation.
