The Flügelmuster — developed by Rudolf Hentschel with his brother Konrad — is one of the earliest and most significant Jugendstil decorations created for the Meissen Manufactory, documented as early as 1904 in L'Art décoratif and the Keramische Monatshefte. It features in the standard scholarly literature of the German Jugendstil movement and in the catalogues of the major decorative arts exhibitions of the period. A substantial collection of the Flügelmuster service is held in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (34 pieces, 1901). The service is also represented in the Jugendstil Neess Collection at Museum Wiesbaden.
Rudolf Hentschel (Cölln-on-Elbe, 1869 – Meissen, 1951), painter and graphic artist, student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (1889–1893) and the Académie Julian in Paris (1894–1895), was one of the key designers of Meissen Jugendstil.
