Ulla & Martin Kaufmann – Two-Flame Candlestick, Sterling Silver 925, Hildesheim Ulla & Martin Kaufmann · Hildesheim · Silver 925 · Handmade · Hammered · Contemporary Design

A two-flame candlestick in sterling silver 925, with a round cylindrical base worked at an asymmetric angle, with torch-shaped socket inserts for two candles, designed and entirely handmade by Ulla & Martin Kaufmann in their Hildesheim workshop. Entirely hand-hammered. A form of absolute simplicity and elegance — the most direct expression of the atelier's creative philosophy: "We develop unique silver and gold objects from simple forms that we bring to perfection."

Ulla and Martin Kaufmann were both born in 1941 in Hildesheim, where they both completed between 1958 and 1962 a traditional goldsmithing and silversmithing apprenticeship, qualifying as master craftspeople. After sojourns in Norway and France (1963–1966), they established themselves from 1970 as independent goldsmiths in their home town, in a former farmhouse they transformed into a workshop and living space. Their collaboration — conducted for more than fifty years as if it were the work of a single hand — is one of the most remarkable creative partnerships in contemporary world silversmithing.

Their works are held in the collections of the GRASSI Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Leipzig, the Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt, the Museum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte in Dortmund, the Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim and the Deutsches Goldschmiedehaus in Hanau. Their distinctions include: Lower Saxony State Prize (1972, 1978) · Hesse State Prize (1974) · Red Dot Award for the Palladio cutlery service (1993) · Red Dot Award for the Passione cutlery service (1999) · Red Dot Award Best of the Best for the TIRA bracelet (2015) · Bayerischer Staatspreis (2018) · Lifetime Achievement Honorary Prize, GRASSIMESSE, Leipzig (2020).
