A bonbonnière / sugar box in silver 800 with gilt interior, decorated with the Apfelbäumchen (apple blossom tree) and Margeritenmuster (daisy) floral motifs, designed by Heinrich Vogeler in 1902 and executed by the Silberwarenmanufaktur M.H. The Apfelbäumchen decoration — intertwined flowering apple tree branches and daisies — is one of the most poetic and characteristic motifs of the German Jugendstil from Worpswede: an idealised nature, delicate and lyrical, inspired by Vogeler's prints and illustrations for the journals Die Insel and Pan. The bonbonnière, model 151891, belongs to a coherent series of silver objects in this decoration produced by Wilkens between 1902 and 1906 — champagne coupe (no. 147471, 1902), punch bowl (no. 147913, 1902), bonbonnière (no. 151891, 1903), bottle cooler (no. 175222, 1906) and vase/beaker (circa 1905).
Heinrich Vogeler (Bremen, 12 December 1872 – Voroshilovsk, Kazakhstan, 14 June 1942), painter, etcher, illustrator, architect and designer, was one of the central figures of the Künstlerkolonie Worpswede. His floral motifs — Herbstzeitlose, Tulipan, Apfelbäumchen — are represented in the collections of the Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Cologne (inv. no. G 1394), the Deutsches Klingenmuseum in Solingen, the GRASSI Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Leipzig, the Focke-Museum in Bremen and the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich.
