Weckström, Lapponia, Large Drop, Sterling Acrylic Necklace 1973

Artist: Björn Weckström / Lapponia

Björn Weckström for Lapponia – "Big Drop" Necklace, Sterling Silver 925 and Acrylic, Helsinki 1973–1974 Björn Weckström · Lapponia, Helsinki · Space Series · Silver 925 · Acrylic · Lapponia Hallmark V7

A sterling silver 925 and acrylic pendant necklace, model Big Drop, designed by Björn Weckström for Lapponia, Helsinki, Finland — design 1973, production 1974 (hallmark V7). Total weight 84.30 g · chain length approx. 75 cm. Hallmark 925 Lapponia V7. Light traces of wear.

The Big Drop model belongs to Weckström's Space Series — the most iconic series of his collaboration with Lapponia, developed in the early 1970s. It was precisely this collection that brought Weckström and Lapponia worldwide recognition: in 1976, George Lucas personally contacted Weckström to commission jewellery for his new science-fiction film — whose title was not disclosed. When the filming schedule was brought forward, Weckström could not deliver in time; the production team visited a Lapponia retailer on Bond Street in London and selected from the existing collection the Planetoid Valleys necklace and Darina's Bracelet — two pieces from the same Space Series. Carrie Fisher, as Princess Leia, wore Lapponia in the final scene of Star Wars (1977): a Finnish jewel that became a global icon of popular culture.

The Big Drop necklace — a direct contemporary of these legendary pieces — shares the same formal vocabulary: transparent acrylic set in solid silver, organic sculptural forms evoking geological formations and cosmic phenomena. Weckström was among the very first designers to combine acrylic with precious metals — a radical break with tradition that made the Space Series an international reference of Scandinavian modernism.

Björn Weckström (Helsinki, born 1935) studied at the Helsinki School of Goldsmiths, graduating in 1956. In 1963 he joined Lapponia as principal designer — a collaboration in which he created over 1,500 pieces. His participation in the international modern jewellery exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1961 brought him immediate international recognition. His works are held in the collections of the Designmuseum Helsinki and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
