A square painting, 37.5 × 37.5 cm, entitled „3 gleiche Farbquanten" (Three Equal Colour Quanta), executed in 1980 by Carl Krasberg. A work of his early mature period — dating from two years after his first solo exhibition at Studio Dawo in Düsseldorf (1978) — and contemporary with his teaching of Grundlagen der Gestaltung (Foundations of Design) at the Fachhochschule Düsseldorf, where he trained generations of designers and architects in colour theory.

The title „3 gleiche Farbquanten" designates the founding principle of the work: each colour — each colour nuance — receives an equal share of the picture surface. The ordered colour sequences, inserted into a grid of squares or rectangles and offset or rotated against one another, create a chromatic network of apparently unpredictable complexity. Colours of similar lightness or darkness draw together into horizontals or verticals, and the picture surface begins to pulse — to advance and recede optically before the viewer's eye.

Krasberg prepared his pigments himself — weighed to 1/1000 of a gram, ground and mixed in the manner of Albrecht Dürer — which explains why each painting required six to eight weeks of work and why his annual output never exceeded ten works. This 1980 piece therefore represents an absolute rarity within an already restricted production.

Carl Krasberg (Wattenscheid, 7 June 1946 – Bochum, 9 January 2024) studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Kassel from 1966 to 1971, served as a scientific assistant at the University of Karlsruhe (1972–1976) and taught from 1977 until his retirement in 2011 at the Fachhochschule Düsseldorf. His work stands in the tradition of constructive concrete art — heir to Josef Albers and Richard Paul Lohse (Zurich Concretists). He exhibited at the Felix-Nussbaum-Haus, the Flottmann-Hallen in Herne (2017), the Nicholson Art Gallery in Brussels (2017) and the Vordemberge-Gildewart-Galerie in Osnabrück.
