Gabriel Argy-rousseau, Paté-de-verre Art Deco Lampe "dance" 1923

Artist: Gabriel Argy-rousseau

Gabriel Argy-Rousseau – Lamp "La Danse" (The Dance), Pâte de Verre, Paris 1923 Model Bloch-Dermant 23.02 · Three Dancers · Patinated Metal Mount · Signed

A pâte de verre lamp in colourless and coloured glass, model "La Danse", executed by Gabriel Argy-Rousseau in Paris in 1923. The cylindrical body presents three different dancers in bas-relief — figures inspired by the ancient Greek frieze, characteristic of the neo-Hellenic vocabulary developed by Argy-Rousseau at the apogée of his production. Patinated metal mount. Signed G. Argy-Rousseau on the lower wall. Total height: 44 cm. Electrification to be verified by a specialist.

The model La Danse (Bloch-Dermant 23.02) is documented in the standard catalogue raisonné: Janine Bloch-Dermant, G. Argy-Rousseau, pp. 59 and 191. A corresponding vase example (model 23.02) achieved 43,750 USD at Christie's in 2016.

Gabriel Argy-Rousseau (Meslay-le-Vidame, 1885 – Paris, 1953), trained at the École Nationale de Céramique de Sèvres in the workshop of Henri Cros, is considered the undisputed master of pâte de verre in the 20th century — the only glassmaker to have developed and mastered this complex process inherited from Antiquity at this level. Between 1921 and 1931 he directed the Société des Pâtes de Verre at 9, rue Simplon in Paris. In 1923, the Société des Artistes awarded him a first prize for his pâtes de verre. In 1925, he was appointed to the jury for the glassware section of the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris.

Argy-Rousseau lamps are among the rarest and most sought-after pieces of his entire production. His works are held in the collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Corning Museum of Glass in New York.
