A sugar bowl in sterling silver 925, model #2B, Blossom / Magnolia collection, designed by Georg Jensen in 1905 and executed by the Georg Jensen Silberschmiede in Copenhagen in 1925–1926. Height 6.1 cm · diameter 10 cm. Georg Jensen hallmark 1925–1926.
The 1925–1926 production corresponds to one of the most sought-after phases of the Jensen Silberschmiede: the workshop was then at its artisanal peak, with silversmiths trained directly under the supervision of founder Georg Jensen himself — who died in 1935. Pieces from this period carry a distinctive hallmark that allows precise dating, and represent for the informed collector the examples closest to the master's original intention.
The Blossom collection — called Magnolia in Danish — is Georg Jensen's first hollowware creation: the 1905 teapot, topped with a magnolia bud and balanced on toad feet, was the founding work that revealed his genius. The floral motif — a stem winding around the handle to emerge as a flower bud on the verge of opening — is the most personal and accomplished expression of Scandinavian Art Nouveau applied to silversmithing. The Blossom flatware pattern #84, introduced in 1919, is the most exclusive and labour-intensive in the entire Jensen production — entirely handwrought.
Upon his death in 1935, the New York Herald Tribune saluted Georg Jensen as "the greatest silversmith of the last 300 years." His works are held in the collections of the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen and MoMA in New York.
